Casa Alonso

This building, located at the corner of Castillo Street with Juan de Padrón, one of the most important commercial areas of Santa Cruz, was designed in 1927 by the architect Antonio Pintor for the owner Juan P. Alonso.  

It is a four-storey construction. The ground floor, intended for warehouses and businesses, features a series of lintelled large doorways. The mezzanine, intended for offices, divides its façade with fluted pilasters. The commercial area is separated from the other two floors dedicated to housing by a large balcony.

On the first level, the windows are continuous between pilasters within a wide opening subdivided into sections. On the top floor, the openings lead to individual balconies with wrought iron railings.

The building ends in height with a rich and complex parapet ornamentation where the pierced shapes of its front (tangent circles) combine with complex separating plinths and pinnacles of great size and opulence.

The property was completed in the summer of 1929, after almost two years of work, initially housing some offices of the Cabildo until the new building of the island palace was built years later.

Casa Alonso was one of the last works that the architect Antonio Pintor carried out in Santa Cruz, after more than forty years of professional career in the city.
