Drago of El Draguillo
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Leisure · Subcategory: Singular trees
El Draguillo is a small hamlet located northwest of the Anaga massif. It has very interesting examples of traditional Canarian agricultural architecture perched on a wide ridge between the Las Casas and Las Quebradas ravines, at an average altitude of 179 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Anaga Rural Park.
Its location is very favourable as it is protected by a natural enclosure. In its surroundings we can appreciate some of the most interesting wild dragos of Tenerife, especially the one located at the edge of the hamlet, to the right of the start of the path that leads to Las Palmas de Anaga.
It is a magnificent specimen of drago ( Dracaena draco ) 5 metres high and almost 2.5 metres in perimeter. Its age has been estimated to be over 100 years. Its wild state and good condition give it the appearance of a curious relic from past times. It shows slight signs of having been exploited to obtain the famous "dragon's blood", sap from the tree which, among many other uses, was dedicated to the manufacture of toothpastes, as it has the property of strengthening the gums and keeping the teeth healthy.
