Flamboyants of the Barranco de Santos

The flamboyant ( Delonix regia ) is a deciduous tree that can reach a height of more than 10 metres and a trunk circumference of more than one and a half metres. From the Fabaceae family, it is native to Madagascar and has acclimatised perfectly in Santa Cruz, with notable groups of these trees in various places in the city (edge of the Barranco de Santos, area of the Rambla de Las Tinajas, Parque García Sanabria, etc.).

What is truly appreciable about this tree with an umbrella-shaped crown and somewhat twisted trunk is its spectacular flowering during the months of June, July and August, when it loses its leaves and flowers of an intense red colour (sometimes orange) appear in abundant lateral clusters, providing an undeniable beauty to the surroundings where they are located.

The fruits, which remain hanging from the tree throughout the year, are long pods with seeds inside, which can be used as percussion instruments.
