Hermitage of San Sebastián

The foundation date of this hermitage is unknown, but it is known for certain that it is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city. At the end of the 16th century it is mentioned through its festivals, considered of some importance, consisting of a small pilgrimage held on the octave of the saint, carrying the patron in procession to the mother parish. The hermitage was located on the outskirts of the town, beside one of the main roads leading to La Laguna, a paved route running parallel to the Santos ravine.

In 1736 an important renovation was carried out on the building, moving the main door to face east; its nave and sacristy were also enlarged. At the end of the 19th century, with contributions from local residents, the bell tower was added and the building acquired the appearance it has today.

During the first centuries of its existence, the hermitage of San Sebastián was the meeting and worship place for the farmers, millers and shepherds of the southern sector of the town. Its patron was regarded as an intercessor against the plague, and prayers were frequently held in this place on the route between Santa Cruz and La Laguna.
