It is the oldest of the paths that effectively connected the port of Santa Cruz with La Laguna. In Torriani's map from the late 16th century, the route of this path can already be clearly seen.

Its development began at the edge of the sea and entered through the old La Caleta street, then passed through Ancha street, the Church, El Cabo bridge which crossed the Santos ravine, then took the route of the current San Sebastián road until reaching the hermitage of the same name. From there it tackled some steep climbs and escarpments until reaching what is now the Cruz del Señor, where it headed towards La Cuesta until reaching La Laguna.

It was the most important path in the area until the opening of the Zurita bridge in the mid-18th century. With a great gradient, its maintenance was always a problem for the authorities, involving countless and endless works that were necessary for decades to keep it in an acceptable state for the traffic of people, horses and goods.
