Immersed in Doubt

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Literature · Subcategory: Literary fragments · Year: 1995 · Authors: Agustín Quevedo Martín

In this novel set between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Agustín Quevedo describes in the form of a testimony the adventures of his protagonist, Julio Riberas, a boy who discovers through his curious gaze the reality of a particularly harsh period such as the Spanish post-war era.

"As soon as we left the house, we took a turn towards the pier, my favourite pastime, then we went up Castillo Street, crowded with people because of the day's festivities, and ended up in Weyler Square, where we bought cones of hot chestnuts before continuing through Veinticinco de Julio Street to the square of the same name, commonly known as Plaza de los Patos, where we sat on one of the artistic masonry benches, plastered with shining tiles depicting cars that had been in circulation in previous decades.

Immediately I got up again. I had seen some classmates nearby and went to play marbles with them, a pastime that had become very popular in Santa Cruz and that I was quite good at."
