Monument alluding to the climate

In the centre of a small and secluded square located in the heart of Parque García Sanabria, this monument was built around 1942. Attributed to the architect José Blasco, the work rests on a stone base from which two vertical prisms of local stone rise, and on the edge of their union there was once a thermometer, now missing. The monument is topped by the figure of a small iron turtle that bears the signs of the zodiac and the silhouette of the island of Tenerife. With this work, the author wished to pay tribute to the Island and its climate.

The square is enclosed by pergolas made of tea wood and beneath them four benches constructed with bricks and local stone, decorated on their backs by tiles and polychrome mosaics representing the arrival of the conquerors to the Island and their encounter with the aborigines. The scenes were titled as follows: Arrival of the Conquerors , Customs of the Guanches and La Orotava Valley , The Battle of Acentejo and Types, riches and current civilisation of the Canaries . The tiles were commissioned from the Viuda de Mensaque y Vera factory in Seville, according to the drawings of the Canarian artist Lía Tavío.
