La Calera Necropolis

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Archaeological sites

The aboriginal necropolis is located in the area known as Valle de La Ladera, on the southern slope of Monte de Las Mesas, in a place called La Calera, very close to the urban boundary between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The valley has a very steep longitudinal profile, with the site situated in a narrow transverse crevice opening at an altitude of 420 metres above sea level. The entrance to the burial cave appeared sealed by a dry stone wall and inside multiple burials have been verified, believed to have been made during different periods. Part of a funerary set was also found, with no evidence of mummification or embalming.

Related to the necropolis, at a lower elevation, there is a group of caves that were probably used as living places by the ancient inhabitants, as aboriginal ceramic remains were detected in them.
