The recently refurbished La Regenta is located in the town centre, and occupies the building of what used to be a former tobacco factory, from where it gets its name. The centre has exhibition halls set out on two floors, one hall is for a variety of uses with room for 50 people, a library and media room, as well as a terrace suitable for a variety of open air activities. It also has administrative offices, workshops and artistic production areas, as well as store rooms for the storage of the many works of art in its collection. The original building was designed by architect Fernando Delgado, and dates roughly from the 1940s. The building was acquired by the Canary Government in the 1980s at the request of poet Manuel Padorno, and was refurbished to be used as an exhibition centre, opening its doors to the public for the first time back in 1987.

The La Regenta building constitutes one of the few examples of industrial architecture to have survived to the present day, and stands as a fine exponent of the architecture developed in this part of Las Palmas to support the economic activity at the ports. It currently houses the only stable art room of its kind, and is a reference point for culture in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
