Museo Casa de Colón (Columbus Museum)

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Cultural spaces · Subcategory: Museums

The Casa de Colón is a history museum, packed with a wide range of collections, in which groups of objects from a variety of cultures and latitudes are on display, as well as from different times, backgrounds, aesthetic values and even functions.

The sheer diversity of these collections of materials go from pre-Columbian archaeology to European Flemish paintings, as well as pictoral pieces of American Baroque and aesthetic styles from 19th century Canaries.

The museum also houses a wealthy collection of maps of the Canary Islands, which together with the facsimilies or copies of maps linked to the period of the Spanish Conquest and the colonization of America, help visitors understand the changes in how the world was conceived. Christopher Columbus was just the beginning, following him came new lands, oceans, races, wealth and foods brought back for the Europeans.
