Church of Los Dolores de Schamann

The Los Dolores de Schamann temple, when inaugurated on 19 March 1959, caused genuine surprise because it departed from the usual architectural canons of the island's churches.

This new church, except for the Pantocrator and the accompanying figures located on the façade, is of overwhelming starkness; the walls and ceiling are formed by flat white surfaces; arches, mouldings, columns, and altarpieces have no place within this generous liturgical space, uncontaminated by any ornamental concession.

The author of such an original project was the Catalan architect Joan Margarit Serradell, who at that time had been hired by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council and was also commissioned to design the plans for the Central Market [...], the urbanisation of Plaza de la Constitución, where the great obelisk stands, groups of social housing in Schamann, and other interventions required by a city in expansion.

Regarding the exterior decoration, the Pantocrator with apostles on the façade is the work of the sculptor Juan Márquez Peñate.
