Juan Rodríguez Doreste (1904-1989) was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He studied Commerce in his hometown and took monographic courses in Philosophy and Art History in Madrid. He worked as a journalist as editor of the newspaper El País de Las Palmas and as director of the newspaper Avance . Closely linked to El Museo Canario, he was interested in Canarian culture dedicating part of his studies to personalities from the world of culture and science, to art and to the folklore of the archipelago. In the 1980s he engaged in politics, becoming mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and senator for his island during two legislatures.

Advertiser, essayist and lecturer, he is the author of several books among which stand out Cuadros del penal and Memorias de un hijo del siglo.
