The Las Palmas Wall

For centuries, this wall, apart form its military function, constituted a dividing line between the city limits and the surrounding countryside. It was set off by the inner perimetre, which remained practically unaltered from the 16th to the 19th century, taking in the two main central districts of Vegueta and Triana, as well as some of the outskirts which climbed up over the nearby hills and generally go by the name of “Riscos”, meaning steep slopes, with these taking the name of Santo tying in with the Hermitages built on them. The fall from grace of the old defensive system and the strong expansion of Las Palmas then led to the almost complete disappearance of the Wall.
