The José Saramago Municipal Library, located in the Añaza neighbourhood, is the latest branch library created within the Municipal Library System, dependent on the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council with management by the Autonomous Organism of Culture.

It was inaugurated on 29 July 2002, adopting the name of the Portuguese Nobel laureate José Saramago at the request of the 8 de Marzo Neighbourhood Association of the same neighbourhood. The interest shown by the Añaza Platform in having a library in the neighbourhood was fundamental for this cultural project to come to light. 

The library was born with a collection of 3,500 volumes of books, part of which came from the private library of Gilberto Alemán. It currently has a collection of approximately 7,300 documents, including books, magazines, newspapers and DVDs. 

The José Saramago Library shines as a prominent place within this popular neighbourhood of the Southwest district, where most public housing actions have been concentrated since the end of the last century. Located next to the multiple citizen entities based on the Rambla de Añaza, the centre provides an important service to the citizens of this area.
