Chapel of the Third Order

This chapel is located adjoining the southwest side of the Church of San Francisco, with entrance from Villalba Hervás street.

The construction, of a single nave with the interior ceiling painted in fresco, began in 1760 and was inaugurated three years later, although it was not completed until 1768.

It houses the image of Nuestro Señor del Huerto, a work from the early 18th century. Also to be admired on the walls of the temple is perhaps the most valuable and oldest Via Crucis in Tenerife, with fourteen canvases, a work by Juan de Miranda.

Since the declaration of Santa Cruz as an exempt town in 1803, the town council met on many occasions in this chapel to hold municipal meetings, elections of representatives and elections of deputies to the Cortes, as there was no more suitable place in the city at that time.
