Traslarena Cemetery (San Andrés)
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Religious architecture · Year: 1893
The town of San Andrés had since 1828 a cemetery located behind its parish church. This place was overwhelmed by more than forty residents who died as a result of the severe cholera epidemic that spread through Santa Cruz and its surroundings in 1893. This circumstance led to the decision to bury the victims of the epidemic in a place somewhat distant from the town, on the other side of the ravine’s mouth to the north, very close to the head of the beach that would later become Las Teresitas.
Years later, some of the victims of the shipwreck of the Flachat were also buried here, which in February 1898 ran aground against the coasts of Roque Bermejo, very close to the Anaga lighthouse.
In 1911 the enclosure acquired the structure we see today when it was enclosed by a perimeter wall. In 1930 the small chapel was built, which also served as an autopsy room.
The San Andrés cemetery was in use until June 1964. Since then, the residents have been responsible for maintaining it in appropriate and dignified conditions as a tribute to all those who have been buried here.
