This sculpture is the result of a competition held in 2003 to replace the unique "Chicharro" sculpture, after its disappearance from the central square of the same name.

After the donation by the Liqui Liquis of a new "Chicharro", the winning sculpture of the competition titled "Cardumen" was placed in the area where it is now located, in front of the headquarters of what was CajaCanarias and is now CaixaBank.

Its authors, Evelina Martín Rodríguez and Francisco Javier Rodríguez de Armas, designed a work consisting of two fundamental parts: the stone base, a geometric cubic shape two metres per side and made of basaltic phonolite (chasnera stone); and the upper part of stainless steel in the form of a mobile.

They did not resort to the isolated image of a fish (a chicharro), but worked on the idea of the group, forming a shoal or school of fish, which according to the authors themselves symbolises the different values that must prevail in any community in the search for a common good.

Currently, the space where the sculpture stands is named Plazoleta Pedro Gómez Cuenca "Charlot", in tribute to the person who during so many carnivals masterfully embodied the universal tramp created by Charles Chaplin.
