Montes Building

On the site left after a fire that devastated a large part of the lower area of Castillo Street in April 1945, the architect Javier Felip Solá drew up the plans in 1948 for this large building for the owner Miguel Montes Rodríguez.

Designed for housing and offices, it is a five-storey building conceived within a clearly regionalist or neo-Canarian style that proliferated in the city after the Civil War. 

We must highlight the intelligent solution of the chamfered corner on its exterior: curved balconies, imitating the native ones, with a tiled roof on the top balcony and the curious finishing with a triumphal arch crowning the building. The openings on the first floor have semicircular arches with closed parapets; lintelled with parapets and cushions on the other floors. 

The entrance portal to the building, with clear Baroque reminiscences and made of local basalt stone, is located on José Murphy Street.
