During the second half of the 19th century there was a boom in the graphic printing sector in Tenerife alongside an active publishing branch that circulated a considerable number of periodical publications in Santa Cruz.

One of the most important printing houses of that time was the Benítez Printing House, founded by José Benítez in 1863, quickly gaining special relevance for being very innovative in terms of machinery and modern methods.

In 1885 the company passed into the hands of Anselmo Jacinto Benítez, the founder’s son, who continued a fruitful career, promoting the construction of a beautiful building, today unfortunately disappeared, located at the corner of Plaza de San Francisco with Calle Villalba Hervás (formerly Calle del Tigre).

By mid-1914, close to the start of the First World War, the owner granted broad powers to his son to fully assume the management and administration of the company until its definitive closure in 1922, after the difficult years during the international conflict that greatly affected the Canarian economy.

In any case, the Benítez Printing House, during its years of existence, was a model to follow in the field of graphic arts, producing numerous publications committed to the development and cultural progress of the city.
