Salvador Vidal Printing Press

This printing press was established in 1857 on Sol Street (today Doctor Allart), number 40, under the name Imprenta Madrileña. It was run by Salvador Vidal, editor and director of several radical-leaning newspapers. In 1868 the printing press was renamed "El Insular", after Vidal was appointed Chief Administrator of the Canary Islands postal service. In 1884 this printer moved to Havana, Cuba, where he continued working as a journalist.

This printing press produced pieces of genuine quality, such as the posthumous edition of Lágrimas y Flores , by Victorina Bridoux y Mazzini (1835-1862), printed in two volumes in 1863 and 1864. The first volume includes a magnificent plate commissioned from the notable artist José Vallejo y Galeazo (1821-1882), whose hand produced some of the most remarkable pieces of Spanish romantic lithography.
