Flower Clock of García Sanabria Park

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 1959

This original element is one of the most attractive features of the Municipal Park. Its main characteristic, besides telling the time as a clock does, is its appearance which varies according to the plants and flowers with which it is adorned. Therefore, it has had and will have multiple appearances, so its sight will always be a reason for surprise.

In 1958 the urbanisation of the side of the park facing Méndez Núñez street was planned, and it was from there that the idea arose to place a flower clock on the slope that connected this area with the central part of García Sanabria.

Fitted between two staircases, the clock was a gift from the Danish consul at that time, Peder Christian Larsen. The mechanism was commissioned from the Swiss firm Favag. It was inaugurated at the end of 1959, this interesting and almost always colourful artefact remaining at the centre of a beautiful composition balanced between the surrounding vegetation and the mountains rising behind, which crown Santa Cruz.
