Triunfo de la Candelaria

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 1768 · Authors: Pasquale Bocciardo

This sculptural group that gives its name to the square that hosts it is dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Islands, and represents her apparition to the Guanches.

The entire ensemble is made of marble and is configured by means of a stepped base leading to a square base as a pedestal on which a second body rises, at whose corners appear the figures of four menceyes. From there rises the obelisk crowned by the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria.

The work was a donation to the city made by Captain Bartolomé Antonio Méndez Montañez in 1768. The authorship is attributed to the Genoese sculptor Pasquale Bocciardo.
