Betunero (Shoeshiner)

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 2015 · Authors: Chano Navarro Betancor

The shoeshiner's trade receives a precious tribute thanks to this sculpture by Chano Navarro Betancor. The crouching figure of the traditional shoeshiner seems to be waiting for the next customer, with the chair unoccupied to be able to sit down. The surroundings of Santa Catalina Park have always had these characters who used to accompany their cleaning work with interesting conversations.

The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria wanted to remember a trade now irretrievably lost. Accompanying the life-size sculpture is a plaque with the following text by Oswaldo Guerra Sánchez: "In my humble hands the arcane polish of joy is recognised, as if wrapped in your disoriented feet on your worldly tour towards destiny."
