Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Leisure · Subcategory: Sports · Year: 1954

The name of Ciudad Deportiva Gran Canaria (CDGC, in Spanish) is synonymous with the most important multisports centre in Gran Canaria. It is located at the southern point of the capital, and is a hotspot for thousands of sportsmen and women, who turn up daily to push themselves at their favourite sports.

The CDGC caters for a multitude of sports disciplines, including athletics, basketball, handball, volleyball, indoor football, swimming, triathlon, table tennis, aerobics, spinning, fitness, body building, martial arts, and so on.

This huge range is down to the diversity of its sports facilities, including: a 400 metre athletics track with 6 lanes, a covered sports pavillion with a capacity for 300 spectators, a 50 metre swimming pool with 8 lanes, 3 body building weights rooms, a martial arts hall, a group fitness activity room, a triathlon room, including running machines and static bikes, a frontón court and 3 mini-frontón courts, 2 squash courts, etc.

A large natural grass sports pitch is a star feature of the CDGC, where today all kinds of athletics disciplines are played, including javelin, shot putt, etc., as well as being regularly used as a rugby pitch. The terracing holds around 800 spectators, with special facilities set up for timing events and the control of different athletic events.

Besides all this, there are many auxilliary facilities for users, such as training rooms, multipurpose halls, a children's play area, office and administration area, adapted dressing rooms, cafeteria and parking for 250 vehicles.

A special mention goes to the existence, in the Ciudad Deportiva Gran Canaria, of the UMED of the Gran Canaria Island Sports Institute, a leading sports medical service on the island.
