Domingo Doreste Rodríguez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1868-1940) is defined as a humanist, in the broadest sense of the word. His style was highly critical and always polemical. He used the pseudonym “Fray Lesco” in his literary life. A notable journalist who dealt with local problems and whose mission as a thinker and artist was to create a true society guided by art, believing firmly that the infinite defects of society would be cured by awakening in everyone the feeling of beauty.

"Fear is a bad counsellor in all life’s decisions; and it is this, not prudence, that inspires the great mass of the Spanish bourgeoisie regarding social reforms. One of the most childish manifestations of such fear is the poorly disguised repugnance to workers becoming educated. Many believe it is best to confine the people in a holy ignorance. To educate them is thought to be as bad as corrupting them and predispose them to all kinds of fierce claims. The mob, once awakened, what will it not do?"
