Domingo José Navarro Pastrana (1803-1896), a physician by profession, held the positions of president of the Gabinete Literario, censor of the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País (Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country) and president of the Museo Canario. At 90 years old he was appointed Official Chronicler of the City and published Recuerdos de un noventón , which analyses the city of his time, and Consejos higiénicos a Las Palmas.

"If you were to count, dear reader, my ninety-two winters (which I do not now wish you, because you would transcend, like me, to incense of requiem), you would notice the enormous difference there is in the physical, moral and intellectual of our ancient and dilapidated city of other times and its dilapidated inhabitants, compared to the very conceited city of today and its conceited inhabitants who make first attempts at Parisian civilisation of the fin de siècle. Surprised by such variation, you would exclaim with the mantuano... ¡Quantum mutatus ab illo!"
