Monument to Benito Pérez Galdós

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Art · Subcategory: Sculpture · Year: 1969 · Authors: Pablo Serrano

In 1969 a new monument of Pérez Galdós was commissioned to sculptor Pablo Serrano, who put together an outstanding piece in expressionist constructivism terms. In it blocks and edgings are superimposed -giving it the appearance of basalt segments on a rocky wall-, above which the face and figure of the writer staunchly emerge, leaning on his cane. This work by Serrano was the first state-of-the-art monumental sculpture in Las Palmas.

In the words of Francisco Morales Padrón: "The dark volcanic mass as the guts of our islands is dominated by the expressive face of the novelist. A face, with its drooping beard, that looks just like any other peasant farmer on the peaks of Gran Canaria".
