Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Category: Literature · Subcategory: Literary fragments · Year: 2022 · Authors: José Luis Correa
In 2022 a new work was published in the noir novel saga starring detective Ricardo Blanco, created by the author José Luis Correa (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1962).
In To Die on the Shore , which is its title, Blanco, with illegal migration as a backdrop, faces one of his most painful cases, as it endangers those he loves most.
As always: a fast-paced plot, a sardonic view of the world, poetic language and, although almost all the action takes place in the south of the island, the ever-present city of Las Palmas.
"I got up from the table disoriented and started walking aimlessly. My feet led me to the Guiniguada ravine, to Pelota Street. I plunged into the passageways of Vegueta, whose shadow eased the heat of the calima and the bravado of Ernesto Leacock […]
The cobblestones of the old neighbourhood echo like horse hooves. It bounces off the dry walls and returns like a childhood memory. How many times had I walked those streets that, as a kid, seemed labyrinthine and eternal to me. At any moment the sharpener's whistle, the ice cream cart, the milkman's tricycle could appear around a corner. Now the path was lonely, but because of my footsteps, it echoed the same.”
