Bust of Alfonso "Chisco" Chiscano

This bronze bust on a marble pedestal dedicated to Alfonso "Chisco" Chiscano was made in 2002 by the sculptor from La Laguna Eladio González de la Cruz.

Alfonso Chiscano Díaz (1938-2019) was a prestigious cardiovascular surgeon born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife who moved in the 1960s to San Antonio, Texas, USA, a city populated in the mid-18th century by Canarian emigrants. Chiscano pursued his professional career in the United States. Over the years he became an ambassador of the Canary Islands in Texas, as well as having assumed the position of president of the Asociación de Amigos de las Islas Canarias (Friends of the Canary Islands Association), as well as advisor to the Oficina de Canarias en Texas (Canary Islands Office in Texas), member of the Fundación Islas Canarias para la Educación y la Cultura (CIFEC) (Canary Islands Foundation for Education and Culture). His work in strengthening ties between Tenerife and San Antonio earned him the Gold Medal of the Archipelago.

His bust is located in San Antonio de Texas square, named in homage to that American town populated by 52 people who arrived in 1731 from the Canary Islands. 

Very close to the statue, attached to the wall of the Edificio Sindical (Trade Union Building), there is a panel made with tiles titled Texas . It represents the map of the Lone Star State alongside the coats of arms of the Canary Islands and Texas and some plant species from both sides of the Atlantic. The mosaic was made by students from Randolph Secondary School in San Antonio, Texas and placed here in June 2003.
