Drago of Pino de Oro

The drago we can see today in the courtyard of the building at Doctor José Naveiras street no. 46 is a replacement for a much older one that existed in the same place and was knocked down by a storm some years ago.

The old specimen was a magnificent drago ( Dracaena draco ) 11 metres high and 4 metres in perimeter. It had a clear inclination towards the South. It had nine large branches and was estimated to be 140 years old; it was probably the oldest drago of all those that existed in the urban area of Santa Cruz.

As a wild tree, it was the star of the magnificent gardens of the old Hotel Pino de Oro, an establishment founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the Elder Dempster company and disappeared in the 1960s.
