Tribute to the Chicharrero

This sculpture representing two fishermen pushing their boat, named Dolores , into the sea, was created by the artist Javier Murcia in 2010. It is located at the entrance of the market hall by initiative of the Cooperativa del Mercado "Nuestra Señora de Africa" and the Caja General de Ahorros CajaCanarias on the occasion of their centenary celebration.

It is a tribute to the past, when fishing activity in Santa Cruz was of great importance; indeed, from very early on the inhabitants of the town were called "chicharreros". This was because the most important productive activity at the time in the area was the fishing of chicharro, a fish frequently caught by local fishermen. Hence, inhabitants of Santa Cruz were identified as chicharreros both by neighbouring municipalities of Tenerife and other islands.

This sculpture was intended to pay homage to those sea workers who with great effort formed an important part of Santa Cruz society.
