This sculpture, placed in 2001 right at the entrance of the Nuestra Señora de África market hall, is a replica of an original artwork by the Santa Cruz artist Guzmán Compañ Zamorano (1878-1944) created in 1907 and kept in the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes (Municipal Museum of Fine Arts).

The one located at the market entrance was made in the Bronzo workshops in La Laguna and donated by the company Celgán as a tribute to all those women who delivered milk from the various stables near Santa Cruz and La Laguna to private homes or to the market.

The image we see realistically depicts a woman who, on her head, covered with a small palm hat, a traditional headdress of our peasant women, carries a basket with several tin containers and another held by the handle in her hand. She is barefoot and maintains a firm step while walking. It is the vivid portrait of those women who were so popular in Santa Cruz not so long ago.
