Bridge of Santo Domingo

This is another of the bridges built during the first half of the 18th century over the Aceite ravine, popularly known as "El Barranquillo". Its purpose was to connect the Santo Domingo convent and the Vilaflor neighbourhood, which had been developing alongside it since the previous century, with the western end of the town centre.

We assume it was a small wooden structure. The polymath Álvarez Rixo in his account of the events of the 25 July feat against Nelson names it as follows:

“… At the time when the two friars were going… to deliver the first intimidation letter to His Excellency, before crossing the Bridge on the Convent side… ”. Or later: “ At half past five in the morning, the English Commander Mr Trowbridge, who was formed in front of the said wooden Bridge of Santo Domingo, requested to speak… ”

This bridge, which today would be at the confluence of Imeldo Serís and Valentín Sanz streets (formerly del Norte), possibly existed until the early 19th century, when the final part of the Barranquillo was vaulted.
