Old Market of the La Salud Neighbourhood

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 1974

This building housed the old market of the La Salud neighbourhood, a commercial enclosure that began operating at the beginning of April 1974 with the aim of meeting the demand of the forty thousand inhabitants who then lived in the La Salud neighbourhood and surrounding areas.

The building, with a horseshoe-shaped plan and façade closed by concrete latticework, was built over a total area of 4,000 square metres, located at height on the edge of the Santos ravine bed. The market initially had 23 sales stalls and a supermarket. The total budget for the work amounted to 26 million pesetas of that time.

The enclosure was active as a food market until the mid-1980s. A few years later, at the end of that same decade, it was converted into the headquarters of various groups of the Santa Cruz carnival. In 2008 it was rehabilitated and improved for this activity.

Currently, it has twenty-five premises intended for the different carnival groups; it also houses the Neighbours’ Association and the San Gerardo Senior Citizens’ Club, as well as the music band Asociación Cultural Unión y Amistad, all integrated into the Federación de Asociaciones Culturales del Carnaval del Mercado de La Salud (Federation of Cultural Associations of the La Salud Market Carnival).
