This tree (Casuarina equisetifolia), native to Australia, Malaysia and Polynesia, is a pine-like species of the antipodes. Beside the Concepción tower in Santa Cruz it rises on a much-branched trunk with rough bark to almost twelve metres.
It looks like a conifer because of its foliage, but it is not. It has a pyramidal form with many branches bearing fine, scale-like leaves, very similar to pine needles, but divided into segments (septa).
This casuarina has settled well where it stands and forms part of the traditional streetscape of the area.
