Maritime Avenue Bridge

At the final stretch of the mouth of the Santos ravine is this bridge which, already over the sea, overcomes the connection difficulties of Avenida Marítima, a road planned at the beginning of the 20th century and today essential for the traffic entering and leaving this lower part of the city.

For the construction of this avenue it was clear from the start that it was necessary to drain and clear the Charco de la Casona that formed there and to build a bridge over it, channeling the Santos ravine in this last stretch.

In May 1925 a competition of ideas was called to adopt a solution to the possible problems caused by the low level of the road and the bridge to be built at the edge of the sea, over a wide mouth. Nevertheless, in June 1929 the final acceptance of the works for channeling the ravine at its end and the bridge that gave continuity to the new Avenida Marítima was carried out, an artery that was opened to traffic on 27 October 1930.

The periodic floods of the ravine and the frequent long-range tides have affected the structure of this bridge throughout its existence. Therefore, from time to time it has been reinforced and complicated maintenance work has been carried out on the base of this important road infrastructure of the city.
