From 1937, Calle del Norte, now known as Valentín Sanz, was extended towards the Santos ravine, which had to be crossed by building a new bridge to allow pedestrians and vehicles to reach the new market to be built in this area of the city's southern expansion.

After the end of the war, the Canary Islands Economic Command called for a competition for the bridge project. It was awarded to the company Entrecanales y Távora, who were ordered to start work immediately so that its completion would coincide with the inauguration of the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África.

The bridge was inaugurated in January 1944, bearing the name of Captain General Serrador, a key figure in its construction. On the pylons at the ends of the viaduct, four lion figures were placed, alluding to this military leader's victory at the Altos de los Leones in the Guadarrama mountains during the Civil War.
