Bridge of the Asuncionistas

This bridge, located on what is today the Avenida de las Asuncionistas, had its first construction in 1870 and was known at the time as the New Bridge. It was built under the guidance of the Public Works assistant Francisco de Aguilar y Fuentes. Its purpose was to cross the Santos ravine following the line marked by the Rambla, in an area that was just beginning to open up to construction but was very important in terms of the road and crossing system. It connected the old Camino de los Coches (today Rambla de Santa Cruz) with La Costa, which led towards La Laguna. 

The bridge began construction on 24 September 1869 and was completed on 25 June 1870. Made of masonry, it had a span of ten metres with a semicircular arch, twenty metres in height above the ravine bed, and six metres wide for carriage passage. By the mid-20th century, this old infrastructure gave way to the current Asuncionistas Bridge, a name derived from its proximity to the Colegio de la Asunción, today Parque Cultural Viera y Clavijo.
