Barbusano of Monte de Aguirre

The barbusano ( Apollonias barbujana ) belongs to the group of trees that characterise the edges and more open sectors of the laurel forest, preferably located at its lower altitudes. Its leaves are lanceolate or oval, dark green in colour, characterised by the appearance of deformities caused by the bites of certain insects. It is admired for its beauty, its evergreen foliage, and its precious wood, hard, resistant and dark, which earned it the name "Canary ebony", widely used for making furniture.

The magnificent specimen found in Monte de Aguirre is located at about 700 metres above sea level, on a northwest-facing slope, just below Pico del Inglés. It is branched from its base, with a very twisted and cracked trunk. It reaches a height of just over 10 metres and has a considerable perimeter. Given its extraordinary branching, it is assumed to be centuries old.
