Tenerife Cruise Terminal

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 2016

The Tenerife Cruise Terminal is located in the heart of the Anaga Dock of the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in one of the docking areas enabled to receive the large cruise ships that visit the city. Cruise activity has increased so much in recent years that the capital's port has become an important operational logistics base for the sector, hosting tens of thousands of cruisers annually.

The construction of the terminal was awarded in 2015 to the Temporary Business Union (UTE) made up of Acciona Infraestructuras S.A. and Constructora de Proyectos y Obra Civil 2012, with the work completed in September 2016.

The building's design was the result of consultations held with the main shipowners, who provided suggestions and recommendations to achieve an efficient and suitable terminal. After this step, the Tenerife Port Authority chose the Berenblum Busch Architecture (BBA) studio from Miami, experts in the field, for consultancy work during the construction.

For the construction of the new terminal, part of the infrastructure of the old sheds located on the Ribera Quay, which hosted movements related to fruit export and paper import, was utilised.

The cruise terminal extends longitudinally along 200 metres. It features three prominent cores, two at the ends and one in the centre, all constructed with prefabricated cross-laminated timber, highly adaptable to volumetric complexity and also providing a high level of thermal and acoustic insulation. The passenger bridge is located on the sea side and runs along the building from north to south. It also has a movable walkway that moves on rails.

With an area of almost 9,000 square metres, the complex integrates check-in, control, passenger waiting, luggage distribution functions, as well as parking areas for coaches, taxis, and zones for logistics and supply.

The official inauguration of the Tenerife Cruise Terminal took place in October 2016.
