On 17th February1879 a public reading was made of the report of the proposal presented for member of merit of the Royal Economic Society of National Friends of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Sr. D. Benito Pérez Galdós.

The Diploma that was issued in honour of Galdós is kept at the Pérez Galdós House Museum, and tells of the merits that members should have, as the Economic Society was «always keen to bring in people who for their patriotism and knowledge may be able to contribute to the institute».

Many years later, Galdós received a letter from the Royal Economic Society of National Friends of Las Palmas, which announced his naming as permanent Honorary President of Regional Government in Madrid. The letter was signed by director Francisco Gourié, on 30th December 1918.

In 1776, Bishop Servera, with the help of Viera y Clavijo, created the Economic Society of National Friends in Las Palmas with the aim of disseminating economic knowledge, developing agriculture and industry, and boost education and the arts. La Económica brought the first printing press to Las Palmas (today kept at the Museo Canario). Its first headquarters was at the Town Hall in Plaza de Santa Ana, and it currently shares the building with the Luján Pérez Painting School.
