Camino de Los Campos

This old path followed the route that today runs along the Ifara road, which connects the urban centre of Santa Cruz with the hamlet of Los Campitos.

The path started from the now disappeared Fuente de los Caballos, located near the Palmera del Parque, and climbed along what is now Doctor Naveiras street, then crossed the Paseo de los Coches and passed in front of the old Hotel Pino de Oro. From here, the path entered an area of steep and rugged slopes, on the edge of the Almeida and Ancheta ravines, until reaching, overcoming great inclines, first Los Campitos and then continuing to the Valles (Jiménez and Tabares), a region of great agricultural wealth. 

It was declared a local path in 1850 and its maintenance was always very difficult due to the rugged terrain, with a huge gradient, which caused large torrents when it rained heavily, making transit impossible.  

This inconvenience was reason enough that from 1918 a new route began to be devised, which became a reality between 1931 and 1933, when the current Los Campitos road was built, starting from Salamanca Alta and, after passing the old Manicomio, winding along the slope of the Las Mesas mountain.

From that moment, the old path that climbed through Ifara was somewhat displaced, although it continued to be used. Today it is vital for connecting various residential estates in that area.
