Fountain of the Horses
Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Memory · Subcategory: Sites of memory · Year: 1805
This now disappeared public fountain was located near where Fernando Pessoa square is today. It was commissioned in 1805 under the auspices of the captain general Marqués de Casa Caijal, situated attached to a large wall that enclosed an orchard at the confluence of Santa Rosalía and San Vicente Ferrer streets, with the beginning of Canales Bajas (now Doctor Guigou) and Los Campos (now Doctor José Naveiras) streets. At that time this outskirts area of the city was surrounded by farmland and fallow orchards.
The fountain was built of basalt stone and had four spouts that supplied water to a basin that served as a public watering trough. It disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century when this part of the city began to be urbanised.
