Houses on Jesús and María Street

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: 1901 · Authors: Federico Solé y Escabia

This group of houses built in the heart of the Hoteles neighbourhood is a clear example of the housing model developed by the Sociedad de Edificaciones y Reformas Urbanas (SERU) at the beginning of the 20th century, intended to accommodate the emerging bourgeoisie of the city.

Under the plans of Federico Solé, these four houses were built, rich in decorative elements and attractive for their use of exclusive textures and finishes. They feature a refined polychromy on their exteriors, unusual in the city until that time. They show the innovation proposed in construction materials, such as the pozzolana brick which, due to its lightness and cohesion, allowed for larger and sturdier spaces. The façades present an air that evokes Anglo-Saxon aesthetic models that would later be emulated in other areas of Santa Cruz.
