Houses for the Tenerife Production Cooperative

This group of houses located in the triangle formed by Teniente Martín Bencomo, Doctor Naveiras and Avenida 25 de Julio streets, near the Hotel Mencey, were built between 1932 and 1948 for La Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción de Tenerife. This construction society was founded in 1905 and began its activity by purchasing plots, first in the Duggi neighbourhood, and later on the other side of the Rambla de Pulido (Benavides, Pérez de Rosas streets, etc.). At the beginning of the 1930s, it acquired a large estate next to the Pino de Oro hotel, slowly proceeding with its urbanisation. The construction project for the different plots was progressively commissioned to the architect Domingo Pisaca, who in 1931 made the first projects for eleven houses distributed between Enrique Wolfson street and Avenida de 25 de Julio. Throughout the 1930s and then, after the end of the Civil War, a whole garden city housing estate of great interest was completed, which was finished in 1948.

The quality of the work conceived by Pisaca in all its phases is of a very high architectural standard. In the long period it took to complete the entire urbanisation, we can perfectly appreciate the aesthetic evolution of the architect. The oldest constructions maintain a moderate eclecticism in decoration; in the intermediate ones he proposes the use of the Art Deco language; and for the last ones, he fully embraces rationalist aesthetics, notably highlighting the admirable way of handling the combination of openings and volumes, and especially the inventive solutions to the different chamfers of the urbanisation.
