Due to the demographic increase in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the consumption of drinking water in recent decades far exceeds the available natural water resources. In response to this, a seawater desalination station was installed in 2001 between the Eastern docks and La Pesquera, on the seafront of the hamlet of Cueva Bermeja, to guarantee supply to the population without any problems.

The desalination plant obtains seawater through wells about 36 metres deep. Once desalinated and remineralised, powerful pumping equipment pushes it towards the various regulating reservoirs of the municipality.
Today, almost seventy percent of the water used for the city's supply comes from this desalination station. The rest is provided by wells and galleries.
