Municipal Swimming Pool

This municipally owned swimming pool was commissioned by the City Council in 1961 to the architect Rubens Henríquez. Today completely modified, the sports complex stands on a triangular plot of 11,000 square metres located in an important traffic hub, at one of the main entrances and exits of the city.

The enclosure has a main hexagonal-shaped terrace where the pool is located, surrounded by space with vegetation. The diving tower it once had, now disappeared, was one of the most interesting elements of the entire work. Situated at the southern end of the pit, it was an organic structure of steel bars that balanced the volume of the stands. On three sides of the terrace, closing it to the north, porticoed structures of exposed reinforced concrete and supports at two different heights were placed to adapt to the slope of the land, with changing rooms installed inside. The roof slab was stepped to form the stands.

The pool bears the name of Acidalio Lorenzo, a great and remembered swimming coach. Many residents of Santa Cruz learned to swim in this facility since its inauguration in the early 1960s.
