Casa La Roche

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Architecture · Subcategory: Civil architecture · Year: ca. 1790

This construction must have been built at the end of the 18th century as a home and business for the La Roche family of French origin, when this lineage settled in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The building, located on Calle del Castillo, has two floors and a symmetrical façade with four aligned openings per floor. The lower part, now quite altered, was always intended for commercial use; the upper part, intended as a residence, has sash windows with wooden sills, a perimeter moulding detail and a cornice above the lintel. The building is crowned by a blind parapet topped with a stone cornice.

The offices of the Compañía Transatlántica Española, an important maritime transport company that connected Spain and America by steamships calling at Santa Cruz, were located for a long time on the ground floor of this house.
