Since the 17th century, Santa Cruz had windmills that took advantage of the trade winds in the area to perform their function. Now disappeared, these windmills were located to the south of the city, on the right bank of the Santos ravine, in the upper area of the Cabo neighbourhood. In fact, this neighbourhood saw a proliferation of tahonas or bakeries closely linked to the windmills. This circumstance may explain the names of several streets in the neighbourhood, some of which are preserved (Calle del Humo, de los Molinos), others disappeared (Calle de la Tahona, de las Panaderas, del Molino Quebrado).

Some windmills were situated near the current area of the Nuestra Señora de África market and others further south, near the San Juan castle and the La Regla hermitage.
