Street Sculpture Route II: 01. Red Sun

Santa Cruz de Tenerife · Category: Route · Subcategory: Street sculpture II · Year: 1995 · Authors: Edgar Negret

This sculpture was part of the II International Exhibition of Sculpture in the Street of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1994. It was made by the Colombian artist Edgar Negret (1920-2012) in 1995 and initially located in the middle of the car park of the Parque Marítimo.

It is a sculpture made of aluminium and placed on a stone pedestal, configured as an allegory of the rising sun over the horizon. It is formed by laminar aluminium modules, joined by screws and nuts. It is characterised by the use of geometric elements whose compositional rigour assimilates biological characteristics not lacking in poetic force.

The work was made in Tenerife by the scholarship holder Manuel Suárez, under the supervision of Drago Díaz and Manel Aldeguer, professors at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of La Laguna, following the model sent by the artist at a 1:10 scale.

In 2024 the sculpture underwent careful restoration, while being moved to the lower part of Parque La Granja.
